Suzanne Proksa:
Welcome to the Suzanne show. With me, Suzanne Proxa, h r and business strategist, former featured etsy seller, plant addict, concert lover, gardener, landscaper in training and humans straight up obsessed with helping others and cheering on women. Here we talk a little business, personal development, women's health, and a whole lot about things that matter. Help people and give them joy. Grab your coffee or your wine, break out one of your hundreds of notebooks, light that soy candle and let's dive in. Hello, everybody. I am here to talk about yet another topic that is near and dear to my heart and that is how to uncover your purpose when you don't know where to start. And I am talking with Trang when today, Trang is a purpose and performance mentor who helps you as you pivot, redefine your career or transform your life to live out your purpose and potential. In her mid 20s, Trang experienced a quarter life crisis that led her to leave the sports industry so she could contribute to change at a more comprehensive and global scale. Now Train is determined to help other women step into their greatest power and thrive in their lives of impact. Because ultimately, when enough individuals are thriving, then humanity will thrive. And when humanity thrives, then the world can thrive for all forms of life and future generation. Treying, I am so happy to have you here today. I am all about purpose. I just finished recording another podcast about purpose, so I am really pumped for today. So what else would you like to add to that intro? What else would you like people to know about you before we dive into questions?
Trang Nguyen:
Thank you so much for that beautiful introduction, Suzanne. And firstly, thank you for having me on the show. I'm delighted to be here and I'm really looking forward to sharing this conversation together. I think you did a great introduction. That is exactly me to the T. I am a human being who is absolutely driven by serving my heart and my soul's purpose. I really do believe that one of the most beautiful things about our consciousness as human beings is that we get to use our life to leave the world a better place than how we were born onto it. And that is a big part of why I do what I do, which I'm sure we'll get into more throughout this conversation. And, yeah, in addition to serving my heart's purpose, I am so many other things as well, right? Like I am a mentor, I'm a speaker, but I'm also a lover, I'm also a friend, I'm a daughter, I'm a sister, I am a dog mum. I am an experiencer. I love doing new things, whether it is related to challenging myself intellectually, like I did stand up comedy recently, but also through adventures. Like getting near to death makes me feel so alive. Like motorbiking, scuba diving, I love hiking, I love camping. I love skiing. I love to just experience as much as possible that this human life has to offer. So that's me. Thank you.
Suzanne Proksa:
Thank you for improving on my intro. How did you get to what you're doing now? And what is a quarter life crisis? Let's start there.
Trang Nguyen:
This is going to get juicy. Yes, it has been a full journey to get to where I am now. Let me start off by sharing what you mentioned before. Suzanne, I haven't always done this. This isn't what I've always been doing. This isn't the path I've always been on. When I finished school, I went straight into uni and I graduated to start working as a physiotherapist and a running and strength coach. So I was working in the health and sports industry and I was generally cupped. Well, I was generally happy, I was generally successful. Also, I thought, until one morning in my mid twenty s a few years ago where everything changed. So what happened was I went for a run this particular morning and when I stepped out onto the sidewalk to start, I hear a crunch and I'm like, what's that? What's going on? I look down and I stepped on a snail. Now, this isn't the first time that I've stepped on a snail before, but for some reason this particular morning, I couldn't stop thinking about it. I couldn't help but feel guilty that me doing my own thing, living my own life, I had caused an effect on something outside of me. In this case, I'd kill something. And as I continued to run, I started to see the bigger picture. I started to see how this isn't the first time this has happened before my current lifestyle. There are so many ways that I was neglecting other forms of life. And this really opened up my awareness. Because from this morning onwards, for the coming months, I started to see more and more ways that my life had consequences that I wouldn't see, whether it was the plastic that I was using or the clothes that I was wearing. And I could start to see how, as an individual, I had so much power. Like, I had so much power in changing things around me or having an effect on things around me, yet I simultaneously felt so small. I felt so insignificant and helpless. I could never do enough to create the change that I wanted to see in this world. And this sent me spiraling. Like, this was the start of my quarter life crisis. Because there were days where I would go into work and I would be teaching people how to squat in the gym or teaching people how to do wrist exercises for their pain. And I was like, this is what I'm doing with my time and my energy. But I feel like I could be doing more. I feel like I could become more. I need to do more to create more change because as I'm doing this, there are things that are happening in the world that are so urgent, that are so catastrophic. Like, there were days where I'd go into work and I just feel a bit apathetic. There were days where I'd go into a hole of looking into how humanity had such a role of devastation on the planet, on different ecosystems, on different forms of life, and I would just be so distraught. I'd cry, I'd feel helpless. I'd feel like I could never do enough. I'd feel like everything was hopeless. And that is what I called my quarter life crisis. It was this huge inner turmoil. I felt like there was this weight on my shoulders because I now had this awareness. It's funny, because I'd previously known that as an individual, I'd have an effect, I'd have a level of impact on the world around me. And I knew that logically, right? Like, in primary school, we'd have, like, Earth Day where it would turn off all the lights to look after the planet. So I knew this, but it never really emotionally mattered to me until now. So now that I had this awareness, I just felt this weight on my shoulders that I needed to do so much more. But at the same time, I was like, well, how can I do more? I'm just one person. I'm so small. What can I really do? This is what I'm doing for working out. This is what I've been doing for seven years. I'm good at this. This is what I've always known. This is how people know me. As there were so many fears of what I could do to really follow what my heart was telling me to do. There was a lot of fears, there was a lot of inner conflict, and that was what created this existential and this quarter life crisis. And I do want to mention, I know it sounds funny, like me setting on a snail, and that changed my whole life, but that just shows it's the smallest things in our life that have the power to change the entire course of our life. It's the smallest things, and not every small thing that happens is life changing. Like I said, I'd stepped on snails many times before, but when I stopped, when I reflected, then I unlocked the catalyst and the awareness to then create that change in my life. So, yeah, that is where I landed. And then that's what created the initial steps to my career change, to be doing what I'm doing now.
Suzanne Proksa:
Thank you for that. I just love hearing how people got to where they are now. It's always so fascinating. So let's talk a little bit about purpose. One of my favorite words. How would you define purpose and why is it so important to consider?
Trang Nguyen:
This is such a beautiful question, Suzanne. Yeah, I believe that purpose is so important to consider because I have been through the depths of the consequences of not being led by my purpose, not living a life that is aligned to my heart's purpose. And I'm talking about my quarter life crisis, what I just spoke about before a year of inner suffering, of going through the motions, of showing up at work just because of what I've always done, of living day to day. But lacking, just lacking deep drive, lacking deep interest. Feeling like something's still missing. Feeling like what I'm doing is meaningless. I'm just going through the motions. That is what I've experienced. And can I just say it's no way to live. It leads to dark and empty places. And I know that I'm not the only person who experiences this. I know that because I've had hundreds of conversations with people who have gone through the same thing, whether it's a quarter life crisis, whether it's a midlife crisis, whether they are generally doing well and they're generally happy from the outside. But deep inside of them, there's this little feeling that something's not quite right. And then that grows over time. And we see that. We know that this is a thing. Because how many people do we know in our lives? How many people that we see in the media and how many celebrities or successful CEOs or millionaires? How many of them are so accomplished and they've achieved all of these milestones that society looks up to, but they're still miserable, they're unhappy. They're not deeply fulfilled. And the reason why we see this is because success in itself is a trap. Success in itself doesn't mean anything unless there is meaning to it, unless it is aligned and true to our heart's purpose and to define what that means. It is deep inside of us what we want to do with our life, what impact we want to have with our life, how we want to use our life for the better, how we want to finish up our lifetime on our final day on our deathbed. How we want to look back and see that we have done everything with our time on this planet to show up as our own highest self and to leave the world a better place than how we were born onto it. That is what I believe purpose is. And yeah, I do believe that every single person on this planet has a deep yearning, has a deep purpose in their hearts and in their soul. And it might not just be one purpose. It will be multiple different purposes that can be fulfilled. I believe that everyone has that. But we've just got to stop suppressing what our heart calls for. We've got to stop getting distracted by all the noise in our lives and in society and in the media so that we can actually uncover what that purpose is. And then we can follow what our heart calls for. And that's going to look different from person to person, right? Like for some people, their purpose may be massive and it may be really in the spotlight. Like, I just think of someone who just comes to mind is Elon Musk very in the spotlight? Like, serving a purpose of making humanity a multiplanetary species, right. Huge. But also purpose can be serving the local community. It can be being a mother and providing the best life for your children. It can be showing up as your highest self in alignment to your values in your own life. So going to work and doing your best and coming home and being a beautiful wife or husband or daughter or son or sister or brother or whatever, it might be going to be different to each person. That is how I see purpose.
Suzanne Proksa:
All right, thank you so much for that. Sometimes when we feel like we found our purpose, impostor Syndrome sets in. Happens all the time. What is your advice to help keep that under control?
Trang Nguyen:
Are you so spot on there, Suzanne? Impostor Syndrome, this is something that I've experienced, and almost everyone who I speak to has experienced this in one form or another. Whether it's Imposter Syndrome or doubt or feeling like they don't belong or feeling like they have low levels of self worth, it is so natural. And the statistics actually show that up to 80% of people experience Impostor Syndrome in their lives. Up to 80%. That is almost everyone. So what I say to those who have uncovered and become really driven to serve their purpose in this world, but feeling Impostor Syndrome, feeling doubt, feeling like, who am I to do this? There are already so many people out there doing this better than me. Who am I to do this? I don't belong. If you're feeling that, this is what I say. We're all individuals. And yeah, it may be true that we cannot change the world overnight. We might not be someone with a million followers on social media. We might not be the best in the world at something, but isn't the best that we can do the best that we can do and isn't doing the best that we can better than not doing anything at all? And that perspective, remembering that if we get so paralyzed by fear and we don't do anything, then we're literally making no difference. We're not doing anything. But if we do the best that we can, even if it's just some small steps, then that is going to be better than nothing. And the reality is, every individual on this planet has something to give. We are all the perfect mold of ourselves. And I really believe that we all have a particular set of life experiences, of knowledge, of skills, of a personality that is perfect. And there is a whole world of people out there. There is a whole universe out there that needs you exactly as you are. And the reason why I say this is because for me when I was transitioning from being a physio and a sports and a running strength coach into purpose and performance and life and mindset mentoring, I was like, who needs me? I'm just a physio. I'm just like a 25, 26 year old. But then it all changed one day when someone messaged me on social media and they were like, hey, Trang, I just wanted to let you know that I'm a physio. And I'm kind of questioning it if physio is the right path for me. In fact, I really want to get into life coaching. And I see that you've done this and you've given me so much inspiration, and you've given me permission for me to do that too. Because I used to think that I couldn't be both. But now you've been the living example that I can do both. And when I received that message from this woman, I realized that me being me, the perfect mold of me. Even though I previously doubted that if me being all of these parts of what I want to do whether that was right, whether I was allowed to do that, whether it'd be weird. But I realized as soon as I got this message that me doing me has been the exact inspiration and has created so much empowerment for one person out there to do her. And if there's one person out there who's messaged me, imagine how many other people out there that are going to be inspired by me, that need me to be doing this, that need me to show them that it's possible. So what I say is, don't dim your light. The world needs you. And even if you are scared and fearing how you will look doing things, if you will fail, if there's going to be all those thoughts, which is so natural, so normal, just remember, if you're not going to do it for yourself, do it for others out there because they so need you. And do not dare dim your light because you deserve to be doing what you love. You deserve to be living a life that is fulfilling and others need you so much. So what I'd recommend is as frequently as possible. So every day would be epic. But if it's not every day, a few times a week or even once a week, sit down, open up a journal, get out a pen, and start writing down a list of all the reasons why you are capable. All of the reasons. Because when we toot our own horn and when we sit down and intellectually acknowledge all of the reasons, all of the ways that we have proven ourselves wrong in the past, all of the ways that we are actually powerful, we are strong, we are capable, you actually will get surprised that there are so much evidence. There is so much evidence of why you are worthy and you are capable. And the more that you do this, the more that you will override and squash your impostor syndrome. Because here's the other thing. As well as humans, we do have this psychological bias, and it's called the negativity bias. You could have 20 people say really beautiful things to you, but if one person, just one person, if they say something negative about you, do you notice that you forget about the other 20 lovely things that people have said about you, and you focus and latch onto that one thing that someone said negatively about you? That's a negativity bias. So that is a psychological phenomenon. So what we need to do is we need to rise up above that. We need to remind ourselves that we actually have so much going for us, and we need to crowd out that one negative piece of feedback. We need to crowd out that one time we failed, that one time we didn't do well, and crowd it out with the 30 other times that we did do things well, that we did prove that we are worthy. And that is how you rise above imposter syndrome. It doesn't happen overnight. It does take work. It does take time, but it is possible.
Suzanne Proksa:
All right. Sheer gold right there. Hopefully everybody was taking notes. So you talk a lot about starting with the end. What does it mean to start with the end?
Trang Nguyen:
Yes, this is something that I do talk a lot about starting with the end. Why I believe so much in starting with the end is because a lot of people, they don't start with the end, and they start with the start. So what I'm thinking of is at the start of the year 1 January, how many people think, okay, based on where I'm at now, based on the last year that I had, the failures that I had, where I've got into what do I want to do and where do I want to go from here? So then they make decisions based on their current situation, where they're at now. Or a big example could be when someone is 18 years old, they're in their final year of school, and they're like, what do I want to do with my life? And they start with, okay, well, what do I enjoy doing now? Right? What do I currently know about myself? I like being social, so maybe I should work with people. I like to do work that gives me weekends off because I like to go partying on weekends. So I'm going to try and find work that is Monday to Friday, and it's stable hours. A lot of people, they do that. And when they make decisions based on where they're at now, they also then get caught up in the current noise and in the current narrative of the life that they're living. So it could be societal conditioning. It could be like the narrative that their parents have told them. It could be what they think they should be doing based on the media or based on what their friends are doing. So people can really get caught up in the noise that is around them. And what that leads to is that leads to people spending the best years of their life racing up the mountain. They're chasing what it is that they think they want now, what it is that everyone else around them is doing. They run up the mountain because society is very focused on results and progress and there is a lot of validation and acknowledgment for clear, obvious milestones like career milestones, like financial milestones, like marriage, house, kids, all those things get caught up in that. People spend the best years of their life racing up the mountain and they get to the top and they realize it was the wrong mountain. That's what I had. And that's what so many people experience. Quarter life crisis, midlife crisis. They climb the wrong mountain because they start with the start instead of before even starting to climb the mountain. Stopping and asking ourselves, what view do I really want from the top of the mountain? What is it that really matters to me? What mountain do I really want to climb? And this can be small scale. Like it can be as small as starting with the end, right? For today, if I were to go to bed fulfilled and really happy and peaceful, then what do I need to do today? It can be at the start of the year asking, all right, if I get to the end of this year and I am completely fulfilled and proud of myself, what needs to happen this year? But what I often guide my clients with is going big picture and starting with the end of our entire lifetime. So on our last day, on our deathbed, if we were to be completely fulfilled, completely at peace, completely proud of ourselves and who we've become and what we've achieved, what impact we've had, what is it then that matters? Who is it that we need to become? What is it that we need to do in our entire lifetime? Because now what we are doing is we are looking at the mountain that we want to climb. We are looking at the view that we want at the top of the mountain. And when we go that big picture and when we do it properly, then we are speaking from the heart. We are speaking from the soul, not just from the mind. Because then when we do that, then we're like, okay, this is what really matters in our life. This is what I really, really want and this is what really means. This is what actually is meaningful to me in my lifetime. And that creates clarity, that breeds conviction in the path that we choose. And from there everything that's happening now, right? Whether it is any fears that we're experiencing, whether it is judgment from other people. Whether it is getting what everyone else is doing is the opposite of what it is that we are seeing for ourselves in this lifetime. None of that matters anymore. The start, what is happening in the present moment doesn't matter anymore. Because the only thing that matters is us getting to the end of our life and living our highest life that is true to our heart's purpose, true to us. And this is what happened to me when I went through this quarter life crisis. I was in limbo for so long. I was internally torn what I should do, should I just keep doing physio? Should I keep working in the sports industry because I'm already making a name for myself? Or should I just pivot and change completely? And I was in this quarter life crisis for over a year. Like I kept going back and forth. Like my heart wanted this, but also my head told me otherwise. And it was when I did this deep deathbed visualization experience and I was guided by my incredible mentor at the time. That is when I realized nothing matters more than me living my highest life and me creating my dream life and me living a life where I can impact the world as much as possible. Nothing matters. And that was the day that I finally went all in on my pivot, on my career change, on creating my dream life. And that is exactly what I get to do today. So starting with the end is what leads us to fulfillment. Otherwise we're just blindly climbing the mountain and then we get to the top and we don't get to experience that fulfillment.
Suzanne Proksa:
So then somebody, they look at this, they start with the end. They have a purpose in mind.
Trang Nguyen:
What next? Okay, I love this. The next step, there are two things I've got in mind. One is to take immediate action. Take immediate action. Because what can often happen is people like they might go on a retreat where they do all of this work or they spend a weekend reflecting deeply and then they ignite this fire inside of them. But then Monday comes around and then they go to work and then they kind of just manage and go through the motions of their day. And then Tuesday rolls around, wednesday, Thursday, Friday. And then before they know it, the fire has died inside of them again. And they are just showing up in their day to day routines for another three months, another six months, and nothing really changes. We've got to take action immediately. We've got to. Otherwise everything else in your environment, right, your current routines, the current people that you spend your time with, all of that is going to naturally pull you back to your current state. It's going to pull you back to everything that you currently know and everything that you currently are and do. So you've got to really create force and momentum to carve out a new path in your life and to do things differently ASAP, whilst you do have this fire inside of you. So that's the first thing you've got to take immediate action from there. It's not just about taking immediate action, because sometimes people can take immediate action and then they're on a roll for like, one or two weeks, and then what happens? They fall off the wagon, and then they resort back to how they've always done things and the life that they've always lived. So the other part of this is staying emotionally connected, staying spiritually connected to this purpose, to our soul's purpose. And on a daily basis, ideally, even if it's just for two minutes or on a weekly basis for a longer period of time. Like reconnecting with the end, like reconnecting with what the heart calls for, what our soul's purpose is. And how I do that is I usually get my clients to go through what I call a creation method, because if we're not creating our life, then we are simply managing our life. We are simply reacting to what comes up in our life. So what I give to my clients is this creation method, and it's this full process where at the start, you start big and you connect and reflect and revisit emotionally and spiritually to your purpose and to your vision and your mission in life. And then from there, you start becoming more and more and more micro until you actually plan out your week. You actually plan out your day to make sure that you are productive, make sure that you are still showing up with high levels of performance, but making sure that it is still on track and still aligned to your vision and to your purpose. So part of that creation method at the very start is simply writing down in your journal what it is that is your heart's purpose, reminding yourself, this is my purpose. And not just writing it out, not just like repeating the same words and copying what you wrote last week, but writing it out again from the heart and then taking a moment. It can be 20 minutes, it can be five minutes, it can be 30 minutes. Taking some time to close your eyes and to visualize it, see it's happening, manifest it, and then feel the fire in your body. And as I'm saying this, I've got my eyes closed because I can feel it. Like everyone says, I've always got so much passion, I've got so much energy, and that is because that is exactly because of this. I am constantly aware of the deeper reason for why I do everything. And I see this for you as well, Suzanne. You have so much drive and so much fire inside of you. So, yeah, just visualizing and feeling the emotional response in your body of how excited and how big and how grand and how meaningful this. Is to you. So really having that come up, doing that on a regular basis and then now you'll be able to have so much energy, like so much passion and enough resilience to overcome things and obstacles that will show up inevitably. You will then be able to stay consistent and keep moving forwards on your path of fulfilling your heart's purpose.
Suzanne Proksa:
All right, thank you for that super helpful information. And at this point, I'm sure there are people out there who want to reach out to you, want to know how they might work with you, where do they find you and what kind of help do you actually offer people with doing this work?
Trang Nguyen:
Yeah, absolutely. The easiest way to find me is on Instagram. That's where I'm most active. So my instagram handle is at Trances Newen Suzanne. I'm sure you'll put the spelling of that somewhere, but the spelling of it is T-R-A-N-G-C-E-S-N-G-U-Y-E-N. That's the easiest place to find me. I'm very active on there. And then from there you'll find all of the links to my podcast, to my website and to all the offerings that I have. So all my offerings, there's a variety of the different offerings depending on your needs. So I run online group courses, Power Your Potential, I run in person retreats, Life of Legacy and one on one mentoring as well. And the most beautiful thing that I love about my group courses is that they take you on a journey. They take you on a journey where you start with the end, you really uncover your heart's purpose. So if you're not sure that, then you will get more clarity if you are already clear on your purpose and you'll be able to connect even more deeply to it so that you can move forward with conviction and with absolute fire and drive. And then we work through the self worth challenges because as I mentioned before, if you don't have full conviction and self worth, then you're self sabotaged. You won't allow yourself to pursue your outcomes, let alone receive them. And then from there it's moving into the practical stages, the pragmatic resources and strategies for you to actualize your outcomes and to create your dream life, to pivot and to build your dream career or business of impact, of purpose. So that's including high performance habits, personally and professionally, money, mindset, day to day time management, like all of the things required for you to create your reality. So I take you on a journey, it includes all of those stages so that you can transform yourself from the inside because that is the only way that you can transform your external reality. And that is how I help you to pivot and build your dream career or business of impact and of a purpose. And in one on one, how I do things is I go on the journey with you, every one on one mentee. Our partnership is going to be different depending on your goals. If your goal is starting a business, versus growing your business, versus pivoting careers, versus simply rising up to be your highest self and achieving career milestones, getting a promotion, hitting financial goals, it's going to look different for everyone. But I'm there with you on your journey. I am your partner to give you support, to give you guidance, to be there when you fall, to help you fast track your progress and all of those beautiful things. It is very magical what I do, and it's why I love what I do, it's why I love what I do. It's so fulfilling and I get to create the most beautiful connections.
Suzanne Proksa:
Thank you for that I just love so much. This is one of the things that I love about this podcast is just talking to so many amazing people that help with things that are important. So I just love that you're here. And my next question for you is my favorite question. If you've listened to the podcast, you already know it's coming. What are your two or three takeaways from this episode that you want to make sure that people are writing in that notebook, that they're putting in their one note, that they're really going to take some action on and think about when the episode is done?
Trang Nguyen:
Yeah, beautiful. I'm going to share and summarize the key ideas that I have already mentioned. So the first one being be guided by your heart's purpose in life. Because if we haven't learnt from the millions of people who've experienced this, we know that success on its own, it can be a trap, it doesn't mean anything unless it's aligned to our heart's purpose. So live by that. It's what allows us to live our best life, to have all this energy or this joy or this happiness in our life, but also to get to the end and to feel fulfilled and to feel peace. So what that means is you must start with the end. Start with the end. Don't just look at where you're at now and what's happening now and what you might crave or what you might desire right now. Look at what you crave and desire on the last day, on the last of your life, on the last day of this decade, on the last day of this year. And be guided by that, because that is your heart speaking. Not any fears and not any noise that is coming from your reality right now. And then lastly, once you've done that, back yourself. Get out your journal daily, weekly. And write out the key things that make you so damn powerful, make you so worthy, so capable of achieving everything that you currently desire and more. Do it. And I know that it's very easy to listen to these episodes and to feel a burst of inspiration and then to finish the episode and never to think about it again. But I really, really want you to use this episode as a force of change. And I really want to challenge you, listening now, to put in place some sort of regime in your daily and weekly life to connect to the end, connect to your heart's purpose. Write it out. Like, write out your purpose in a single statement, in a single paragraph. And use that to be guided by and then to constantly write out lists of why you are so worthy. Because I know I speak to so many people who struggle with this. This is their current blockage. This is what's holding them back. So I'm giving that to you so that you can skip that process and you can get started on creating this life of abundance, of fulfillment, and of purpose trying.
Suzanne Proksa:
Thank you so much. I hope that nobody ran out of ink in their pen on that one while they were writing everything down. But I am just so grateful that you decided to join me today. And this advice is always just sheer gold for the audience. So I feel so blessed to have you here today. Thank you so much for sharing, and I look so forward to seeing you again, out and about on the socials and all of that. So thank you again and talk to you soon.
Trang Nguyen:
Thank you so much, Suzanne. This has been so much fun. Thank you for doing what you do, for serving your purpose and shining your light on the world.
