Using DM to Build Relationships and Create Leads with Myown Holmes (BMM EP042)

Dec 28, 2023

"Slowing down is not just okay, but necessary."

Today, I'm super excited to spill the tea on how YOU can master the art of direct messaging to build relationships and create leads, featuring golden nuggets from my chat with the amazing Myown Holmes. Let’s dive right in, shall we?

Starting the Conversation

First off, let’s get one thing clear: sliding into someone’s DMs shouldn’t feel like you’re crashing a private party. Myown Holmes gave some stellar advice on this. Start by asking if the material you shared was useful. This simple question can open doors to deeper conversations and shows that you care about adding value right from the get-go. No one likes a spammy cold pitch!

Respect the Bio Boundaries

Ever scrolled through someone's bio and seen No DMs? Take it seriously. Myown reminded us that ignoring this can get you blocked or unfriended faster than you can say 'social faux pas.' Instead, opt for emailing these individuals; they appreciate it more, and you remain in their good graces.

Value Over Money

It can be so tempting to jump straight to the moolah, am I right? But both Myown and I agree: think about the long-term game. Building solid relationships equals long-term success. Remember, it’s a marathon, not a sprint!

Balancing Acts: Business and Personal Life

Now, who here feels like there just aren’t enough hours in the day?  Myown has some excellent tips for balancing business and personal life. The trick is in the scheduling. Use tools like Google Calendar or GoodNotes, or if you're a bit old school like me, get yourself a Happy Planner with all the stickers!

Personalization Over Scripts

Here’s the lowdown: Copy-pasting scripts is a big no-no. Personalize your messages! Doing a little research goes a long way. Comment on something specific about their recent post or ask questions that show you genuinely care. This makes your DM stand out in the sea of generic messages.

Platform Proficiency

Not all platforms are created equal. The style that works on LinkedIn might not fly on Instagram or Facebook. Make sure you adapt your messaging to fit the platform you’re using. Tailor your tone and approach to the social media landscape you're navigating.

Engaging with the ‘Silent Stalkers’

We all have those followers who watch our every move but never engage. These 'silent stalkers' can be gold! Don't be afraid to reach out with a friendly message. It could be the nudge they need to engage more publicly with your content.

Bot Basics

Yes, bots can be a lifesaver if used correctly. Myown suggests setting up a separate email for social media interactions and using a bot to direct messages there. This way, you can keep your inbox manageable and reply to messages in a timely manner.

Keep Track, Stay Strategic

Finally, a little organization goes a long way. Myown recommends keeping a spreadsheet to track your contacts and conversations. This helps you stay on top of your networking game and ensure you're not bombarding anyone without offering something valuable.

So there you have it, friends! Let's make our DMs a treasure chest of genuine connections and opportunities. Until next time, stay fabulous.
