The Surprising Trick to Creating Hilarious Content - Even If Youre Not Funny with Rachael Kay Albers (BMM EP043)

Dec 29, 2023

"Pivot and adapt rather than complain."

We have some spunky insights to chat about today! I had an enlightening conversation with the incredibly talented Rachel Kay Albers on my podcast, Business Mojo and Margaritas. Rachel is not just any marketer—she’s a business comedian who uses sketches and humor to make marketing engaging and effective. Now, isn't that a breath of fresh air?

Let me share some juicy nuggets from our chat that you can start applying to your business today. Whether you're sipping on a margarita or just a plain old coffee, these tips will give you new perspectives on marketing, even if you don't consider yourself the funniest person in the room.

  1. Turn Frustration into Gold

Rachel expressed her annoyance with people constantly griping about Facebook algorithm changes. Her solution? Pivot and adapt rather than complain. She took her frustrations and turned them into actionable content. If something in your business is driving you bananas, why not use that energy to create valuable content that addresses those pain points? It's a chance to position yourself as the solution-oriented expert your audience is craving.

  1. Focus on Who You're NOT For

One of my favorite takeaways from Rachel was her unique approach to niching down. Instead of stressing over pinpointing your ideal client, try focusing on who your brand is *not* for. This reverse-engineering process can help clarify your messaging and attract the right people. It's a bit like dating—you quickly figure out what you don’t want and, in turn, recognize what you do want. Go grab some paper and jot down who you don't connect with and see where that leads you!

  1. Embrace the Marketing Alter Ego

Rachel shared her inventive idea of creating a marketing alter ego. Think of it as your brand's quirky cousin who does the opposite of what conventional wisdom suggests. This approach isn't just fun—it’s a brilliant way to unearth fresh, creative content. Write down the things your alter ego might say or do. This exercise can help you break out of a creative rut and give your marketing a playful twist. It's about stretching those brain muscles and having a laugh while you're at it.

  1. Clarify Your Brand's Values

Rachel walked us through an impactful exercise that I'm eager for you all to try. Draw six boxes on a piece of paper.

In the top three, write down:

- I don't believe in...

- I won't work with people who...

- I'm not a good fit for...

And in the bottom three:

- I do believe in...

- I love to work with people who...

- I'm a perfect fit for...

This exercise can ground you and help clarify your brand’s core values, making your messaging crystal clear and attracting your ideal clients.

  1. Address Real Issues, Not Just the Dream

We also talked about our shared frustration with misleading posts about achieving overnight success. Rachel's antidote to this? Focus on the building blocks of a successful business. Talk about real, tangible steps your audience can take, rather than just painting the dream. This approach not only builds trust but also delivers real value, setting you apart from the noise.

In conclusion, turning frustrations into content, focusing on what your brand isn’t, using a marketing alter ego, clarifying your brand’s values, and addressing real issues are practical strategies you can apply starting today. The road to hilarious, engaging content is paved with these creative exercises and mindset shifts.

I can't wait to hear what you think about these ideas and how you plan to implement them. Join the conversation over in my Facebook group and share your thoughts!

Cheers to creating unforgettable content and having a blast while doing it!
